You might think that all penguins prefer to chill out in Antarctica.
So what are these guys – and their funky fresh hairdos – doing in the middle of a forest?
It’s the Fiordland crested penguin! Crazy skill: forest survival.
Fiordland Crested Penguin
Crazy Skill: Forest Survival
It's made a home, or habitat, in the forests of New Zealand.
habitat
The thick forest provides lots of places for the penguins, and their chicks, to hide from predators.
But the little ones are hungry, and like Antarctic penguins, all their favorite foods come from the sea.
The adults use forest streams as handy highways to the sea, and return with a fresh catch inside their beaks.
The chicks will stay safe in the forest until they’re big enough to make fishing trips of their own.
So how crazy is the Fiordland Crested Penguin?
Crazy-o-meter
forest habitat
Instead of the icy Antarctic, this penguin has adapted to a forest habitat. That’s kinda crazy!
