Helping to see the colors of fall

Fall has arrived! And with it, amazing colors, as leaves on trees turn from green to shades of red, orange, and yellow!

But for people with color vision deficiency, also known as 'color blindness', these seasonal changes can look different. Colors can appear less bright and clear, and the differences between colors may be less noticeable. Virginia State Parks are hoping to change this for their color-blind visitors.

They have installed unique viewfinders in each of their 43 parks. The viewfinders’ lenses have filters that help people with red-green color blindness to see those colors more distinctly. Making a view like this, look more like this.

The project is led by Chief Ranger Ethan Howes, who is color-blind himself.

“This colour-blind viewer will allow folks with red-green color blindness to be able to see a larger variety of shades and hues."

The results are already impressing color-blind visitors….

“It was incredible, just going from a bunch of things that, uh, blend in, to seeing stuff that pops.”

“OK, now that’s cool.”

“I’m now, I’m not just looking at this palette of generics that are around me now, it’s a vivid landscape that I can enjoy.”

The team hopes that this project will help more people enjoy the seasonal, colorful views this Fall.
