COP29

Transcript

The final climate report card is in for 2023. As a planet, we’re getting a failing grade. Around the world, cities are having to take major steps to protect themselves from floods and extreme weather. The latest data shows the planet is on course for 2.6 degrees celsius warming this century if nations continue their current trajectory.

This week, world leaders are getting together for COP29.

COP is an annual conference where governments, scientists, business leaders, and activists discuss ways to limit the impacts of climate change.

This year, it will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan.

One of the main goals will be for countries to make commitments on how to reduce carbon emissions. Such as using less energy from fossil fuels and using more energy from renewable sources.

They will also look back on past promises. Previously, countries agreed to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees celsius. However, scientists have warned that we are currently on track for a rise of more than 2.5 degrees celsius.

If this happens, there will be even more extreme weather and natural disasters. At this year’s COP, countries will be urged to implement changes to get back on track. Climate change can feel really worrying, but COP is an opportunity for the entire world to get together and find solutions that will benefit the planet and its people.
